Chapter Eleven: First Class Of The Day!

“What was that all about?” Penny asked, glancing at the boy who’d flicked Constance off.

“I don’t know, I’ve never even seen him before” Constance said casually, trying to shrug off the fact that he’d just gave her ‘the finger’.

    “That’s Alexander Nolan” Andrew said.

    “You know him?” Constance asked.

“Yeah, he’s been here as long as I have. He’s top of the food chain, he’s not popular, but everyone knows who he is” Andrew shrugged.

“Does he normally do that? Flick people off?”she asked curiously.

“No, I don’t think so? I don’t know him that well.”

     “Sorry for asking…?” Constance hesitated.

“Hey, there” another boy came up to Constance; she recognized him as one of the guys hanging around the boy who’d flicked her off.

“Can I help you with something?” Constance crossed her arms over her chest.

“I just wanted to welcome you to Lock & Key, I’m Henry Knight” he held out his hand for her to shake.

“Is he a part of the welcoming committee too?” she pointed to the guy who pointed his middle finger in her direction. “‘Cause he gave me a pretty terrible welcome”

“I saw that,” Henry nodded. “And I apologize for his rude gesture, he usually isn’t like that. Will you accept my welcome in return for his?”he held out his hand again.

“I think your boyfriend is calling” Constance said, lifting her chin in the group by the fence.

“Can you just shake my hand?”

“Can I just kick you between the legs?” she retorted.

“No,” he shook his head. “But you can shake my hand”

“If I shake your stupid hand will you leave me alone?”

“For the rest of the day, sure” Henry pulled out his hand again.

Constance shook his hand quickly, and watched as he walked back towards where his posse was waiting for him. “What was that?” Penny asked, grabbing her wrist alertly.

“I have no idea…what is it with people and welcoming other people here?” Constance put her hands in the pockets of her black flares. She wore one of her brothers, old and holey t-shirt with it, and a pair of black ballet flats her mom bought her a while back.

“I love your hair,” Penny commented, a little off topic, as she pulled on Constance’s high ponytail. “It’s so curly…when did you have time to do that on the bus this morning?”

“It’s naturally like that” Constance ran her fingers through her naturally, loosely curled hair.

“Ooh! It’s so pretty!” Penny said.

“Um, Penny? That was an odd subject change” Andrew spoke up.

“Yes, I know. I sometimes suffer from ADD…” she murmured.

“There was a kid I had in my class who had ADD, he was really cool” Constance smiled at her.

“Good Morning class,” a man said dully, walking into the class room. He was dressed in a grey suit, with a white dress shirt under his grey button up vest. With a pair of grey pants; he looked pretty young, no older than 27 probably. “I’m Jacob Mackentire, that’s Mr. Mackentire to you”

“Good morning Mr. Mackentire” the class grumbled lazily.

"The only reason I’m saying this is because I see we have a new student among us, please, don’t hesitate to introduce yourself” the teacher looked Constance in the eye and gestured for her to come to the front of the class and introduce herself.

“Um, I’m Constance Marie…and Marie is my last name, in case you weren’t wondering. I was born and raised in California, so I’m really far from home…my best friends are Ethan Stone and Jean Miller” she summed it up, and moved to go back to her seat.

“Why are you here?” Mr. Mackentire asked curiously.

“Because my mom signed me up or it? I’ve never even heard of this school before” she said truthfully.

“Do you know what kind of school this is?”

“No, and Ethan won’t tell me either.” Constance admitted.

“Well, this school is for the psychologically challenged” he stated.

“You mean this is a school for mental people?”

“In a way? Yes. Now take your seat,” he said sternly. “Now class today we will be learning about the history of our origin.”
