Chapter Five: Jean's Crush!

“Mom!” Kimberly yelled, storming into their 3 story apartment building with Jean right behind her.

“Yes, honey?” her mom brushed back a piece of red-brown hair out of her face as she untied the apron around her waist. “Hello, Jean” she smiled at her daughter’s best friend.
“Why are you doing this to me?!” Kimberly shouted at her.

“Doing what to you honey? All I did was clean your room” Ms. Marie said calmly.

“You’re sending me all the way across the U.S. for some stupid school!” her eyes started to water, she hated yelling at her mom.

“Constance, sweetheart, this will be good for you. You deserve some time away from the city, some peace and quiet,” Ms. Marie set the apron on the hook and took Kimberly’s jacket from her hand and put it on the coat hanger by the door. “You can still call us every Monday and tell us how your week was”

    “But mom—!” Kimberly choked.

Her mom wrapped her arms around her daughter, and rubbed her back. “I’ll miss you too, Constance, but it’ll be okay”

“Constance,” Jean pulled on her friend’s shirt sleeve. “You have to start packing”

“Alright…” she tore away from her mom and trudged up the stairs, not bothering to take the elevator. On the way up they passed her mother’s office, the dark mahogany desk and bookshelves, everything you’d need to work at home.

“What was your mom talking about? You know, when she said you could call us every Monday? Doesn’t she know I’m going with you?” Jean asked, sitting on the floor next to Kimberly’s suitcase.

“She doesn’t know Ethan’s going with me either” Kimberly whispered from where she was loading her many, many, black shoes into a bag for her suitcase.

“Ethan’s going? God, no” Jean threw herself onto her back; hitting the floor with a thump.

“What’s wrong with Ethan? Jean, you’ve never had a problem with him before” Kimberly stuffed the bag into her suitcase, along with her makeup bags, hair products, hair accessories, and jewelry. She zipped that suitcase closed and got out another one.

“I’ve had a problem with him since the 5th grade” Jean murmured.

“What did he do to you in 5th grade? Was it that crayon he put down your shirt? ‘Cause I’m sure he didn’t mean to upset you” Kimberly covered.

“No, I, um, I sorta have a crush on Ethan…” Jean admitted.
