Chapter Six: Saying Bye To Mom!

“What?!” Kimberly shouted in a whisper.

“Ever since  we stopped believing in cooties I sorta thought he was cute…” Jean muttered.

“Well why didn’t you tell me?! All those years of me sitting the middle at the movies, and on rides in amusement parks!” Kimberly sat on the ground next to her best friend.

“I didn’t want you to think anything of it,” Jean shook her head. “He doesn’t like me anyway”

“He might! You never know!” Kimberly exaggerated.

“And, I’d rather have you sit between us than me having to sit by him…I barely know what to say around him without feeling stupid….!” She exclaimed.

“I’ll help you!” Kimberly smiled widely at her friend.

                      ~*~*~*~*~*~

“Constance! The bus is here!” her mom called, standing by the door with her daughter’s favorite jacket and purse/carry-on in hand.

“Um, bye Mom” Kimberly said awkwardly, then hugged her mom tightly.

“Do me a favor?” her mom said, once she let her go.

    “Sure mom” she nodded.

“Use your real name,” her mom took her daughters chin in her hand and made her look up at her. “It’s beautiful, just like you” she kissed her daughters forehead, and opened the door to find a boy standing there waiting.

“Um, hey Johnny” Kimberly said meekly.

“Hello, Ms. Marie,” Johnny nodded in her mother’s direction. “Kimberly, I need your bags” he held out his hands.

“It’s Constance, now,” she corrected. “And they’re right there” she pointed to her 3 suitcases in the doorway.

“Have a great night, Ms. Marie,” Johnny nodded as he walked towards the black Double Decker bus. “Constance, your seat is on the second layer of the bus”

“Bye mom!” she kissed her mom’s cheek and gave her a tight hug before running to the bus, and up to the top where her bus seat was waiting for her.

                           ~*~*~*~*~*~

“Hey!” Jean shouted, as soon as Kimberly got to the second floor of the bus.

Ethan was in the row next to her, and Jean had her humungous purse in the seat next to her. “Hey there” Ethan waved, giving her a forced smile.

“Aw Ethan,” Kimberly sat next to him. “You actually came”

“Of course I did,” Ethan ran a hand through his tangled blonde mess of hair. “I wasn’t going to let you and Jean go all the way to New Hampshire without me, then I’d be stuck with hanging out with your mom”

“What’s wrong with my mom?” Kimberly asked crossly.

“Nothing, she’s super pretty, but I’d rather hang out with you than hang out with your mom” Ethan stated.

    “Was that a compliment?”

“To who, your mother or you?”

    “To me, dumbo” Kimberly laughed.

    “I guess” he shrugged.

“So, Kimberly, how did your mom take it?” Jean asked, leaning across the armrest on the aisle seat.

“I told my mom I’d go by Constance,” she corrected. “And she took it pretty well. I’ll call her the first chance I get”

“So, Ethan, how did your mom take it?” Jean asked.

“Um, she took it pretty well. I mean, I’ve left home before so she’ll be okay” Ethan lied.

“Ethan…” Constance whispered, looking him in the eye.

“She’ll be fine” Ethan assured her.

    “But Ethan…” she murmured.

“I’ll be fine” he corrected, giving her another forced smile.
