Chapter Three: The Representative!

“Hey, you” Ethan jabbed Kimberly’s shoulder with his forefinger.

“Hey to you too” she said, not having to look up to see who it was.

“Shouldn’t Jean be here already?” he asked, looking around for her.

“Maybe she had to pick out a specific uniform skirt to wear.” She shrugged.

“Are you kidding me? All her skirts look the same, and all you ever wear are those khaki pants.” He noted.

“I don’t like skirts,” Kimberly shook her head. “And, you guys have to wear the same pants, so I don’t know what you’re complaining about”

“I hate these stupid shirts,” Ethan pulled on his baby blue, long sleeve, button up shirt and tightened his tie. “And these ties too”

“We have to wear white shirts, with the ‘option’ of a navy blue blazer. So I don’t wanna hear it, Mister” Kimberly grumbled.

“Hey!” Jean yelled, running up the street in her plaid uniform skirt, white button down shirt, and black heels.

    “You’re late!”Ethan called back.

“You could’ve left,” Jean stated. “She could’ve waited for me by herself”

“And leave her by herself during the hours it takes you to get ready in the morning? No thanks.” Ethan said.
                            ***-__-***

“Wait! Kimberly, wait!” someone yelled, chasing her down the hallway and up just one flight of stairs.

“Who are you?” Kimberly turned to face him, stopping on the stairs next to the library.

“I’m Johnny Neeley” he held out his hand.

“And, that means something to me?” she said, blowing stray strands of hair out of her face too lazy to pin them back in place by her pony-tail.

“The principal said you could help me out” he put his hand on the stair rail.

“Well,” she sighed. “What can I do for you?”

“Here” he handed her a note.

“What’s this crap?” she asked, shoving the paper back in her hand.

“You parents signed the forms, I’m a representative, you’re supposed to come with me” he ran a hand through his messy hair and looked at her.

“Yeah, about that, I have no idea who you are or what that note was even about” Kimberly’s arms folded across her chest, her messenger bag strap slipping down her shoulder.

“Your parents signed the papers, even Jean’s parents signed the papers” he explained.

    “And Ethan’s parents?”

“His parents died after receiving the letter, and therefore couldn’t send it back even if they did sign it.” Johnny said.

“His parents aren’t dead, he’s been living with his parents” Kimberly said acidly.

“He’s been lying to you then, because I have their deaths on record” he swallowed.

    “Prove it” Kimberly challenged.

“How?” Johnny stepped aside as more student flooded down the stairs.

“Tell me something no one should know about me” she shrugged, knowing he wouldn’t live up to the challenge.

      “Like what?”

“I dunno,” she shrugged. “List things about me, and if more than two of them are lies, I’ll know you’re a fake”

“How?” Johnny stepped aside as more student flooded down the stairs.

“Um, your name is Constance Kimberly Marie, you were born the 29th of February, you’re 15 years old, your favorite color is green, your favorite book is ‘A Tree Grows In Brooklyn’, your best friend’s names are Jean Danielle Miller and Ethan James Stone…?” he finished.

“…how do you know all that stuff?!” she half yelled at him.

“Your parents had a form to fill out all about you”

“Where exactly is Lock & Key? If it’s even a real school” Kimberly said crossly.

“It’s on an island off the coast of New Hampshire” he dug his hands into his jean pockets.

“Do we have to wear a uniform?” she asked skeptically.

    “Unfortunately”

     “What does it look like?”

“All black” he pulled on the edge of his black graphic t-shirt.

“Can it have designs like yours? Or straight black?” she asked. Kimberly couldn’t believe she was even asking these questions, was she actually considering letting this guy take her to some freak school?

“Straight black, but don’t worry, you’ll look fine” Johnny’s eyes wandered over Kimberly’s body, trying to figure out what’d it look like if she were wearing tighter clothing.

“If Ethan finds the papers can he go with us? Well, me and Jean I mean?” Kimberly scanned the hall for Ethan.

    “Yes, of course” Johnny nodded.

A familiar head of blonde hair started to run past her on the stairs. “Ethan!” she grabbed his arm and was yanked down about 5 steps.

“What?” he turned to face her, only to have her stumble and fall into his arms. “What is it?”

“I need you to do something for me,” she said. “Besides let me go” she pushed off him, and took his hand; dragging him to where Johnny was still standing.

“Um, okay? Who’s the dude?” he pointed to Johnny.

    “That’s Johnny” Kimberly said.

“Oh, like Johnny Bravo?” Ethan looked at the guy standing in front of him.

“I’m Johnny Neeley, a representative from Lock & Key” Johnny held out his hand to Ethan.

“Haven’t you guys messed me up enough?” Ethan asked, glaring at Johnny.
